Desk-area Telephony Integration

One objective of the DTI project was to extend the functionality of the Siemens IP telephone sets by means of additional software in a way that enables them to be remotely controlled by other \u201cdesktop appliances\u201d and PCs and to interact with these other systems in the desk area environment. The integration with the desk area environment abstracts as far as possibly from the IP telephony signaling protocols in use (H.323, SIP, MEGACOP), to allow protocol-agnostic solutions (that are, in particular, independent of the respective flavor of the signaling protocol of the week).

The basis for the integration of desk area appliances is an open, well-documented communications protocol: the Message Bus (Mbus), the specification of which shall be expanded and adapted throughout the duration of the project as needed. A particular research aspect in this area is the simultaneous use of multiple IP telephony endpoints (telephone sets as well as software clients): specific cooperation and coordination mechanisms for Mbus shall be investigated to enable automatic handling of (incoming) calls, sharing of local resources (e.g. video applications on a workstation or laptop), and passing of call responsibility from one endpoint to another.
